1. Time trail with volcano demonstration
Book our geologist, Bo, to do a volcano demonstration during your visit to Fur Museum. The demonstration tells the story of the birth of the North Atlantic, focusing on the volcanic ash layers that bind the entire Danish Realm together – with East Greenland and the Faroe Islands as the origin of our ash layers embedded in the molar. Iceland represents current volcanism many millions of years later. The demonstration lasts approximately 20 minutes. Team size can be from one person up to 40 participants.

Price: 200 kr + entrance fee

2. Geology the fun way
Book our geologist, Bo, for a lively introduction to the forces of geology. You’ll learn about the ice age, volcanoes, fossil and mineral formation – and the age of dinosaurs. For 20 years, we have cultivated the art of translating the power of geology into simple and understandable demonstrations that easily explain the basic principles behind the forces that shape the earth’s surface – both past and present. That’s why we offer a few hours of Hands-On Geology (kinetic and tactile learning) to complement the See and Hear(audio-visual learning) that you know from textbooks. The course includes how water, sand and ice have shaped the Danish landscape and at the same time brought Nordic stones that tell us about ancient mountains and volcanoes. We also work with fossil formation and fossil collecting – and learn about beach and sand safety. The course lasts approximately 1 hour and is suitable for everyone. Class size can be from one person up to 15 participants.

3. The past in the present
Book our geologist, Bo, for an exciting experience with the pier’s unique fossils, which present some of the world’s oldest ancestors of selected modern animals. It can be modern fish, horse shrimps, seaweed needles or hoverflies and butterflies. We start in the museum’s collection, where Bo points out the fossilized ancestors of marine life that can be seen at Fur in the Limfjord. It’s fascinating that something that began 55 million years ago is now living in and around the Limfjord. After the tour, we go down to the fjord and catch the coastal animals in the eelgrass. Tales about the modern fjord and a couple of Fur crevices sneak in here. The duration is 1½ hours and the tour is suitable for normal pedestrians.

4. The hunt for minerals and crystals at Knuden
Book our geologist, Bo, for an exciting beach trip where you explore beach stones and soil layers together in search of crystals. By the Limfjord, you can find unique glendonite and barite crystals, elegant gypsum crystals and beautiful dendrites of iron and manganese. Small pieces of quartz and fine feldspar crystals can also be found in the volcanic rock porphyry. In addition, we will hunt for the beautiful Fur stones of the Mountain Troll. The trip is a bit like fishing: The chances of finding something exciting are higher with a local expert – but there is no guarantee of a find. On the other hand, Bo guarantees a volcano demonstration along the way! We start at the museum and look at mineral finds from Fur. The beach tour lasts approximately one hour and is suitable for participants with normal mobility. The group size can be from one person up to 15 participants.

Price: DKK 400 + entrance fee

5. Lecture with the expert on the CO2 trap
Book our geologist, Bo, for a fascinating lecture on the rare mineral ikait – and its fossilized form, glendonite. Most people have probably never heard of ikaite, but many have actually tasted it: It’s the calcareous and hydrous mineral that makes good cheese crunch! Ikaite is named after the Ikka fjord in Greenland. When it petrifies, it turns into glendonite – and the world’s largest crystals of this type are found in the molar on Fur. What makes glendonite special is that millions of years ago it captured CO₂ from the atmosphere, and new studies show that the molar may have the potential to do so again. The lecture lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes an exclusive display of Fur Museum’s unique collection of glendonite from around the world. Class size can be from one person up to 15 participants.

Price DKK 400 + entrance fee

6. The fossils on Fur Beer
Book our geologist, Bo, for an exciting lecture on the connection between Fur Museum and Fur Bryghus’ popular beer. The beer labels are adorned with fossils found on Fur – and behind each label is a great story. The lecture tells about Fur’s amazing fossils and their unique state of preservation, and how – with a little luck – you can find fossils in the area yourself. During the talk, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, there will also be an exclusive opportunity to view selected fossils from the museum’s collection through a microscope. Class size can be from one person up to 15 participants.
